Abstract: Vadodara, the green city of Gujarat is known as the cultural capital of the state. Situated on the banks of the river Vishwamitri the city derived its name Vadodara from the profuse number of the Banyan trees in the city Vadodara. The district assumed its modern name Baroda from the Maratha military explosion of the 18th century. Damaji Rao Gaekwad was appointed as Deputy Commander of the Maratha Military in 1731. The army advanced towards the fertile land of Gujarat. By 1731. Damaji's new phew and successor Pilaji Gaekwad pushed the Mughal force of Gujarat and in 1734 captured the town of Baroda. The Gaekwad initially ruled under the lordship of Peshwa and gradually carved out an independent kingdom in close association with the British Empire.
