Abstract: From District Profile: The picturesque Mizoram, formerly known as the Lushai Hills was brought under the British India in 1891. The North Lushai Hills district was attached to Assam while the South Lushai Hills District formed part of Bengal. In 1998, the two districts were amalgamated and brought under Assam. In 1954, by an Act of Parliament the name of the district was changed from the Lushai Hills to Mizo district. Again, with the implementation of the North-Eastern Reorganization Act (1971), Mizor District ceased to be a part of Assam and became a Union Territory on the 21st January, 1972 under a new name Mizoram. Consequent upon passing of the Constitution (53rd) Amendment Bill and the State of Mizoram Bill (1986) by the Parliament on 7th August 1986, a Statehood was conferred on the Union Territory of Mizoram on the 20th February 1987 to become the 23rd State of the Indian Union. Mizoram now has a 40-member Legislature with a Council of Ministers and The Governor is the administrator.
