From Introduction: The constitution of India provides that the state shall endeavour to provide within a period of ten years from the commencement of the Constitution (ie. 26.1.1950) for free and compulsory education for all children until they complete the age of fourteen years. Besides, the Constitution emphasises on the educational advancement of linguistic or religious minorities, weaker sections of the society and SC/ST. Inspite of these noble provisions, we have a long way to go to universalise elementary education even after more than 50 years of commencement of our Constitution.en_US
