Abstract

From Brief History: This state of Haryana came in to existence on Nov. 1, 1966 having been carved out of the erstwhile state of Punjab under the Punjab Reorganization Act. It is not sure how Haryana acquired its name. Historians have tried to explain 'the origin of the word “Haryana" on the basis of phonetics. To some 'Haryana' is the landing place of 'Har' (Lord Indera) and his 'Lyana'(Chariot) while to others 'Haryana' is combination of 'Hari' and 'Aana' meaning that Hari visited this place. H.R. Gupta claims that 'Haryana' is the corrupt form of 'Aryana', the abode of Aryans. Some historians associate it with 'Haryala-Van' -i.e. the green forests that once characterised this part of the indo Gangetic plains.
