Abstract: From District Profile: Hailakandi was one of the oldest subdivisions in the state of Assam. It was constituted as a civil subdivision on June 1869. Subsequently, it was upgraded to district in 1989. It has an area of 1326.10 square km. Out of this, more than 50% is reserve forest. There are total of two reserved forests in Hailakandi district viz. Inner line reserve forest and Katakhal reserve forest. The district has got inter-state border with Mizoram on its south having a length of 76 km besides inter district border on other sides with Parimganj and Cachar districts. As per 1991 census, it has a population of 4,48, 506. It comprises of two notified towns viz, Hailakandi (district headquarters) and Lala and one industrial town ship viz. Panchgram.
