Abstract: Since its inception in 1989, the Mahila Sianiakhya (MS) programme has been shaped and guided by ils commitment to a philosophy, rather than by chasing pre-set targets. At the core of the programme is a strong faith in the capacity of women to control and change their own lives and situations. Education is a process which enables women to question, conceptualize, seek answers, act, reflect on their actions and raise new questions. As such it is central to women's struggle. The Mahila Samakhya progranune endeavours to create the space for women to come together, to seek knowledge and information, to make informed choices and to become actors in, rather than objects of, development processes.
