Abstract: From Introduction: Ever since the oldest of the modern Universities were established in India, the principal pattern of University education leading to the first Degree in Arts, Science or Commerce has consisted of a four-year degree course broken into two years of Intermediate work and two years of post-intermediate work. Whatever the reasons for starting and continuing with this pattern for 100 years now, the arrangement has not been without its disadvantages, of which only the major ones may be mentioned here.
