From Introduction: The economy of Madhya Pradesh is predominantly agricultural. About 80 percent of the State's population depends directly or indirectly on agriculture. This is why the performance of agriculture and allied sectors has a profound impact on the economy. Due to erratic and low rainfall, particularly in September 1991, Kharif crops were adversely affected in most of the districts. 98 tehsils of 28 districts were affected by the drought. Foodgrains production has fallen from the level of 170.30 lakh tonnes in 1990-91 to the level of 152.65 lakh tonnes in 1991-92 showing a decline of about 10.4 percent.en_US
