From Executive Summary: Mahila Samakhya (Education for Women’s Equality) was conceptualized and initiated by the Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development in 1987-89 in response to achieve the goals of NPE (National Policy for Education 1986). It aims at empowering rural women, particularly from socially and economically marginalised groups, who are deprived of formal educational opportunities. Education for empowerment was broadly viewed as a process of building capabilities and confidence of women by imparting information and skills to take informed decisions on various matters affecting their lives at individual, community and societal level.en_US
