Abstract: The year 1977-78 witnessed unfavourable climatic conditions and floods that affected Kharif crops; labour unrest as sequel to the lifting of emergency; rising tendency of prices; and in the midst of these impediments the dent made by the various schemes towards easing of unemployment to the people in the lowest income groups and raising income of the poor. It is estimated that the net State domestic product at constant (1960-61) prices increased ‘this year by 4.05 percent. While the production of oil seeds, sugarcane and cotton is estimated to be higher than that in 1976-77, the production of foodgrains has gone down to 69.30 lakhs tonnes from 78.80 lakhs tonnes recorded in 1976-77. The mineral production showed declining trend this year but the manufacturing sector (both registered and unregistered taken together) registered increase of about 6 percent over the last year inspite of the disturbing labour unrest which had higher manifestation in April, 1977. The labour situation however, gradually eased in subsequent months.
