Abstract: From Introduction: Malappuram district was formed on the 16th of June 1969 , by amalgamating the distant and backward areas of the erstwhile Kozhikode and, Perinthalmanna and Ponnani Taluks of Palakkad districts. The Nilgiris (Blue hills ) of Tamil Nadu in the east and the Arabian sea in the west , provide natural boundaries. In the north , it is bounded by Kozhikode and Wayanad and in the south by Palakkad and Trissur districts. The district has a geographical area of 355 Sq. KMs. which is 9.13% of the total area of the state , with regard to area , Malappuram district ranks 3rd in the state, the first and the second being Idukki and Palakkad respectively. The district got its name from its head quarters Malappuram leterally means a terraced place over the hills with its scenic coastal line in the west and the hilly tribal belt in the east , Malappuram is a typical backward district in Kerala. There are 94 Panchayaths and 5 Municipalities in the district.
