Abstract: The Government of India is directly responsible for education in the six Union Territories of (1) Delhi, (2) Himachal Pradesh, (3) Manipur, (4) Tripura, (5) Andaman and Nicobar Islands and (6) Laccadive, Minicoy and Amindivi Islands, and in the Centrally administered areas of North East Frontier Agency (NEFA), Pondicherry and Naga Hills and Tuensang Area (NHTA) which is shortly to be elevated to Statehood under the name of ‘Nagaland’. A review of the development of education in these areas in the post-independence period is given in the following survey.
