dc.description.abstractFrom Education: The indigenous system of education was generally continued in the areas now comprising Sangrur district uptill 1956, when it become part of Punjab State. The instruction were imparted in Pathshalas, Chatshalas, Gurmukhi Schools, Maktabs by the Pandits, Bhais, Maulvis, etc. But the rulers were fully aware of the benefits of the modem system of education and they opened number of educational institutions in their territories. For instance the first primary school was opened at Sangrur in 1891. This school was upgraded to high school in 1894. It was followed by Diamond Jublies College near Sangrur in 1899. The first school was opened at Dhanaula in 1873 by the ruler of Nabha state. In 1970-71 there were 22 High Schools, 71 Middle School and 236 Primary Schools in the district. By 31st March 1978 there were 10 colleges, 9 Higher secondary Schools, 141 High Schools, 133 Middle Schools, and 824 primary school in the district. Out of the 10 colleges, 2 colleges were exclusively for girls.en_US
