Abstract: A macro scale system of education has evolved over a period of time in Karnataka state as could be viewed from the data of schools, teachers and students. In order to provide infrastructure facilities and teachers for schools of the state, organize capacity building programmes for teachers, provide stimulating incentives such as free textbooks, uniforms and mid-day meals to students in comprehensive and efficient way, there is a need for basic data about the school system. It would not be possible to provide a meaningful school support system, for all the schools within the jurisdiction of 33 educational districts, 202 educational blocks and 2708 cluster resource centers, without the availability of such basic data. It is the responsibility of the ‘Educational Management Information System’ unit of the Department of Education, the EMIS unit, to collect, process, consolidate and publish educational data which are of foundational value for the system of education in the state.
