Abstract: From Preface: Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan is a flagship programme for universalisation of elementary education within a given time frame. In order to accomplish this task it is imperative to have a planning process in place which emanates from habitation level. Unless the educational status and need of each habitation is known it would not be possible to realize the dream of universalizing elementary education. It is in the light of this that District Information System for Education has been operationalised in the state of J&K. In fact it is one of the important achievements of SSA mission in J&K to operationalize the system. It is probably for the first time in the history of education department in the state of J&K that the basic information about each and every school upto elementary level has become available with least margin for errors. However there are some small gaps in the coverage of private schools. It is only question of time when the coverage will be complete in respect of private schools also. However it is no mean achievement to have covered almost 95% of private schools.
