From Preface: Progressive reduction of unemployment is one of the principal objectives of economic planning. Successive Five Year Plans have had their objective of generation of adequate employment opportunities to those who are unemployed. A large segment of the economy is in the informal sector and it is in this sector that maximum employment is generated. However, in formation about the people working in the informal sector is scanty, and it has not been possible to obtain adequate data on the nature of their employment. On the other hand, the implementation of plan programmes provides sufficient data for the study of employment in the formal sector.en_US
