A measure of price stability is essential for sustaining the momentum of growth, ensuring equitable distribution of the benefits. Inflation hurts the poor most since their incomes are not indexed to prices. Among the principal factors which have helped to contain inflation during the current year are strict control of the fiscal deficit, liberalisation of imports, a tight monetary policy, augmentation of domestic stocks of wheat and rice and relaxation of import compression measures to boost industrial production.en_US
