Abstract: From Preface: Prime Minister Mr. Rajiv Gandhi in his broadcast to the nation, on January 5, 1985 promised a new education policy that would equip the country both scientifically and economically to enter the 21st century. With this announcement, the process of formulating a New Educational Policy began in 1985. Accordingly, the then Education Minister, Shri K.C. Pant presented a 'Status Paper' entitled "Challenge of Education - A Policy Perspective" to the Prime Minister on 20th August, 1985. The sane day, it was presented to the Parliament. There was a nationwide debate on this document. The Ministry of Human Resource Development (Education Department) brought out a revised document entitled" NATIONAL POLICY ON EDUCATION,1986-A PRESENTATION" in April 1986. The document was discussed in the meeting of State Ministers of Education, National Development Council and the Central Advisory Board of Education." Draft National Policy on Education, 1986" was presented in the parliament in the month of May, 1986. The draft was debated and adopted by the Lok Sabha on May 8 and by the Rajya Sabha on May 13,1986.
