dc.description.abstractFrom General Education: Education has been assigned a pivotal role in the development process right from the beginning of the first Plan, Rapid expansion of education facilities from one plan to another has been a characteristic feature of educational planning. The Directive Principles of the Constitution lay down that free compulsory education shall be provided to all the children upto the age of fourteen years. Earnest efforts have been made in the past to really this basic national objective. As would be clear from the following table, there has been a gradual but marked increase in enrolment from 28.18 lakhs in 1951 to 115.24 lakhs. (anticipated) at the end of Sixth Plan.en_US
