Abstract: From Executive Summary: Visakhapatnam district has the second largest concentration of tribal population in Andhra Pradesh Scheduled tribes of the district have one of the lowest literacy rates at 7% (1991 census), and female literacy is abysmally low at 9%. There are twenty different tribes, staying in the eastern ghats, having a total population of 5 lakh and spread over an area of 6500 sq.km. The main tribes are Konda Dora, Bagatha, Valmiki and Nookn Doras. Majority of the tribals are settled agriculturists, even though the practice of shifting cultivation is quite common. Part of the income of the tribal comes from Minor Forest produce (MFP) collection too.
