Abstract: From Chpt.: The State of Andhra Pradesh is endeavouring to fulfil the Constitutional obligation of free and compulsory education to all children upto the age of 14 years to the maximum extent by giving top priority to education, more so to Elementary Education. During the past five decades, there has been a phenomenal expansion of Elementary Education. As a result there are around 49,919 Primary Schools and 25400 Non-formal centres in the State by 1998, providing schooling facilities within a walking distance of 1 K.M. As per VIth All India Education Survey 2.38% of the Rural Habitations do not have primary schooling facility within a walking distance of 1 KM. Number of Upper Primary Schools increased from 329 in 1956-57 to 8142 in 1997-98. 20.46% of the Rural Habitations do not have upper primary schooling facilities within a walking distance of 3.1 kms to more than 5kms.
