Abstract: "Education in India" is an annual publication of the Department of Secondary & Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development. The present publication relates to school education for the year 1995-96 and contains State-wise statistics on institutions, enrolment, teachers, enrolment ratios and drop-out rates, etc. in respect of school education. This publication is divided into two parts. Part -I contains an abstract of the developments in the field of school education during the year 1995-96. It contains time series data on important aspects such as growth in the number of institutions, enrolment, teachers, retention rate, Gross Enrolment Ratios, teacher pupil ratio, dropout rates and female participation. Part II comprises State-wise statistical tables based on the information collected from the States and Union Territories through ES-I(S) forms. Data in respect of Lakshadweep was not received as also for Delhi in respect of repeaters, enrolment and Institutions in Rural areas. The data for these items has been estimated using the 1993 School Survey data and later available data. We are hopeful that this publication would provide useful information to educational planners and policy-makers both at national and state level as well as to those engaged in research and development in the field of education.
