Abstract: Shri M . Jayaram an of the Post-Graduate Basic Training College, Orathnad, Madras who worked with us as a Research Fellow for the year 1958-59 studied the problem of evolving targets for some crafts for the various grades of Basic schools. The present publication is a report of this study. The problem of fixing targets for craft work is an important problem in Basic education. There are two extreme positions taken in this respect. While some persons feel that it may be educationally unsound to lay targets, as they tend to curb creativity of the pupil, others believe that craft work cannot be made purposive without prescribing targets. Shri Jayaraman's study has shown that the targets may be useful from a certain grade and may be considered in ranges rather than as specific requirements.
