Abstract: It is well realised that the method of teaching alone will not be the only factor in the attainment of literacy skills. No one method is ideal in all situations and for all learners. Much will depend upon the organisation of the programme, motivation of learners, the quality of teaching and the class room activities. But it has been assumed that the above conditions will remain almost constant in a Mass Literacy Campaign. Hence, this study tries to compare the effectiveness of the letter and the word method of teaching in the light of the following limited number of variables only.
