Abstract: An imposing system of education has evolved over a period of time in Karnataka State as is evident from the data of schools, teachers and students. In order to provide infrastructure facilities and teachers for schools of the State, organize capacity building programmes for teachers, provide stimulating incentives such as free textbooks, uniforms and mid-day meals to students in comprehensive and efficient ways, there is a need for basic data about the school system. It would not be possible to provide a meaningful and balanced school support system, for all the schools within the jurisdiction of 34 educational districts, 204, educational blocks and 4103 cluster resource centers without the availability of basic data. It is the responsibility of the 'Educational Management Information System' unit of the Department of Education, the EMIS unit, to collect, process, consolidate and publish educational data which are of foundational value for the system of education in the State.
