Abstract: The year 1995-96 witnessed a growth rate of 7.1 per cent. For the five year period, 1991-92 to 1995-96, the average annual growth in GDP works out to only 5.3 per cent. It is estimated that growth rate in GDP for 1996-97 will be 6.8 per cent. It is important to note in this context that although in the last three years of the Eighth Plan, the growth rate is likely to average at 7 per cent, deceleration during 1996-97 cannot be overlooked.
