Although the year, 1988-89 witnessed a strong recovery in agricultural production and maintained industrial growth, employment and balance of payments position were such as to give cause for concern. From the negative growth rate in the agricultural sector during the preceding tow years, when severe drought conditions prevailed, agricultural production improved substantially in major parts of the country. The industrial sector also maintained its growth in 1988-89. As a result it is estimated that growth domestic product will grow at 9 per cent in 1988-89 compared to 3.6 per cent in 1987-88 and 3.8 per cent in 1986-87.en_US
