Abstract: In this survey, information on various facets of employment and unemployment in India and some individual characteristics associated with household members such as age, sex, level of general and technical education attained, current attendance in educational institutions, vocational training received, etc., was collected at the national and state level. In addition to this, information on the religion of the head of the household was also collected. Based on the data collected during the entire period, estimates pertaining to employment - unemployment situation of people belonging to different religious groups in India along with various characteristics associated with them have been presented in this report. This report, fifth in the series of seven reports based on employment-unemployment data of the NSS 61st round, provides information about distribution of households and population; households by household type, land cultivated, monthly per capita expenditure, the worker population ratio, proportion unemployed, etc. for major religious groups (viz. Hinduism, Islam and Christianity). This report consists of three chapters and appendix tables including the introductory chapter One. Chapter Two describes the concepts and definitions of only those terms covered in this report. The main findings on employment - unemployment situation among major religious groups and their broad household and population characteristics are discussed in Chapter Three. Relevant state/ut level tables have been presented at the end of the chapter. The detailed tables based on which this report is based are presented in the Appendix A. Detailed description of the sample design and estimation procedures are included in Appendix-B. A facsimile of the schedule of enquiry canvassed in the field is at Appendix-C.
