Abstract

From Foreword: In the field of Social Education attempts have been made to tackle the problem of Adult illiteracy. An urgent need was felt to evolve a scheme of mass education in the shortest possible time. On the basis of past experiences and efforts in the field of Social Education a new experiment was tried in the State of Maharashtra in Satara District. As an outcome of this trial, a regular scheme under the name of Gram Shikshan Mohim was launched in this State on 17th April 1961. The Scheme mainly aims at eradication of illiteracy within 3 to 4 months, retention of literacy through circulating libraries and bringing about all round development of villages. The scheme is gathering momentum in the State and has attracted the attention of masses and Government of India.
