Abstract: From Foreword: India is one of the nine developing countries of the world which contains about half the world's population and also account for about three fourth of the adult illiterates of the world. Infact India has the distinction of having the largest share viz. 31% of the adult illiterates (15 years and above) of the world. Total number of illiterates of the age group 7 and above in the country at the time of 1991 census including estimates for Jammu & Kashmir was 332.68 million. Of this the seven major states namely Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Maharashtra having more than 20 million illiterates each account for 65 percent of the population and contain 236 million illiterates forming 71 percent of the total illiterates of the country. It has now been decided to give special attention to these states in the national efforts of eradicating illiteracy by the year 2000. For preparing effective district plans, micro planning has to be done at block and village levels. An effort has been made in this book to present population and literacy data upto C.D. block level in respect of one of the above seven states.
