Abstract: From Foreword: The Department of Science and Technology (DST) has the nodal responsibility of formulation of policy statements/guidelines on science and technology and their implementation. To fulfill this responsibility effectively, a reliable data base on the availability and deployment of scientific and technical resources is a prerequisite. Accordingly, DST has been conducting national survey since 1973-74 to collect data on the quantum of resources deployed for scientific and technological activities. UNESCO recommendations regarding international standardisation of statistics on science and technology have been used for data collection. Based on the data so collected, analytical reports on various facets of S&T are brought out by the Department.
