Abstract: From Preface: School education in the different States and Union Territories of India is characterized by a wide variation in terms of the duration of various stages of school education, age restriction for admission to Class-I, medium of instruction, introduction of compulsory education at the elementary stage, teaching of Hindi and English, number of working days in a year, academic session and vacation periods, public examinations, provision of free education and tuition fee charged, adoption of no detention policy at elementary stage of education, syllabus and text books followed etc. This publication, 'Selected Information on School Education in India' provides state-wise information on all these aspects of education for an academic year. The present publication relating to the years 2008-09 & 2009-10, has been prepared on the.'basis of information that has been obtained from the DPI Offices / Directorates of School Education in the States and Union Territories in a pre-devised format.
