A Source Book on Adult Education

Abstract

The operation of the National Literacy Mission since May 1988 has not only infused a new vitality into the adult education programme in India but also has enhanced it’s scope and significance both as a field of study and practice. However, the systematic and scholarly study of any discipline depends to a great extent on the availability of source materials which in the case of adult education remain scattered all over India and abroad. Although, Indian adult education has generated a variety of materials during the last fifty years, practically no effort has been made so far to survey the sources. The present volume is a commendable attempt made by Dr. S.Y.Shah of Jawaharlal Nehru University in this direction. By identifying, classifying and editing some of the important documents on Indian adult education during the last fifty years and surveying the published and unpublished studies on Indian adult education and preparing a chronology of events, Dr. Shah has met a long felt need of adult educators.
