This volume contains three reviews of the state and progress of education in India compiled in 1862, 1867, and 1872 respectively. The first of these reports was prepared by Mr. A. M. Monteath, Under Secretary to the Government of India in the Home Department. and refers to the period 1859-62. Its main object was to enable the local Governments to form an idea of the information required to be included in their reports on the working of the new educational scheme introduced under the Educational Despatch of 1854. The second report relates to the year 1865-66 and was also compiled by Mr. Monteath in 1867. The third report was compiled by Mr. A. P. Howell, Under Secretary in the Home Department. It relates to the year 1870-71. The original report also contains a section dealing with the development of education in India upto 1854 and several voluminous appendices. In the interest of economy, however, these two portions have not been reproduced here.en_US
