Grading in Public Examinations How & Why?
Issue Date: 2000

Abstract: From Historical Perspective: Examinations in India, even though they have been a subject of vehement criticism both by the Educationists and the public, have continued to exist because of a viable alternative. Much has been written by various official Committees and Commissions on the baneful effects of the system of examinations on education in general and secondary education in particular. The Secondary Education Commission after reviewing the shortcomings of examinations at the secondary stage made a number of concrete proposals for their improvement. The most outstanding feature of the reforms suggested by the Secondary Education Commission was the emphasis laid on the modern concept of evaluation in which evaluation was envisaged as an integral part of the total teaching-learning and as an instrument of qualitative improvement in education.
