Abstract: From General Education: The Education Directorate was set up as early as the year 1954. In that year there were only 88 educational institutions which has today risen to 761, including 165 pre-school centres. The enrolment which was only 2,5000 in 1954 is today 83,337 including about 5,000 pre-school children. In 1954 there were 70 lower primary schools, 14 upper primary schools, 2 middle schools and 2 high schools. In 1980 when the Sixth Five Year Plan started, there number of institutions rose to 501 with enrolment of 5506. These 501 institutions comprised 321 primary schools, 44 middle schools, 29 secondary schools, 7 senior secondary schools and 100 pre-schools.
