Abstract: From Physical Profile: The Kerala Sub-region is one of the five Sub-regions of the Western Ghats Region, a macro region delineated for the purpose of preparation of a comprehensive plan under the Hill Area Development Programme of the Planning Comission (Fig. 1.1). It comprises of 21 taluks falling in 9 districts of Kerala State (Fig .1.2) and has an area of 21 ,856 sq. km. and a total population of 6,881 ,115 persons in 1971, of which 92% were rural. It is interesting to note that although the Sub-region accounts for 56.25% of the area of the State but accounts for only 32.25% of its population.
