Report of the Second Backward Classes Commission Volume III

Abstract

We have ventured into a description of castes and communities with a view to clarify the groupings of the various castes, sub-castes, synonyms and related groups included in the State level caste list. We have grouped all the related traditional occupational groups under one main caste name, along with their synonyms and sub-castes. We have extensively depended on the works of renowned authors like Edgar Thurston who has brought out seven volumes on 'Caste and Tribes of Southern India' (First published in 1909) and also Rao Bahadur L.K. Anantha Krishna Iyer on 'The Mysore Tribes and Castes' in 4 volumes (Published in 1928). The representations and evidences given by various caste groups and associations during the Commission sittings at the District Headquarters and in Bangalore have also been taken into consideration in our delberations. Our own Socio-Economic-cum-Educational Survey has greatly helped us to understand their present socio, economic and educational status in the society.
