From Preface: Continuing Education Programme conceived in 1982 has metamorphosed itself through various modifications effected in 1992, 1995*and finally In 1999. In its present form it looks much more people friendly, with liberal financial support by National Literacy Mission (NLM). However, there is a catch. While the Central Government provides financial assistance for the initial establishment and running of Continuing Education Centre (CECs), all of them are expected to become self sustaining after 5 years. This would depend on effectiveness of these institutions and the extent of support enjoyed by them from the community. NLM says that the CECs must be perceived by people as arising from their own initiatives to meet the explicit needs. To meet them, the ZSS will be expected to devise all possible ways to enlist community support and mobilise financial and material resources from the community itself.en_US
