From Introduction: The new State of Madhya Pradesh was formed on November 1, 1956, by integrating four units. It is situated in the heart of India and is surrounded by seven States. The State is largest in the country in terms of area and the sixth most populous. Though having extensive mineral and forest resources, rich and fertile soil and reasonably abundant water resources, the pace of economic development is slow, with the result that it is still categorised as a low income State, in company with Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Orissa.en_US
