Abstract: From Foreword: It is a great pleasure to release this small brochure containing ‘State of Goa Indicators of Socio-Economic Development, 1998’, on the eve of the Thirty Eight Liberation day i.e. 19th December, 1998. The brochure gives important statistical indicators as at the time of Liberation in 1961 at the time of Statehood in 1987 and those for the year 1998. The State was brought into the main stream of national development through implementation of the five year plans, soon after Liberation from the erstwhile Portuguese Regime. The wide array of socio economic indicators presented in the brochure will enable any reader to comprehend at a glance the impressive progress registered by the State since its Liberation. It may be clarified that the figures, for pre-Liberation or immediately after Liberation period, relate to the erstwhile Union Territory of Goa, Daman and Diu except where otherwise indicated, while the figures for 1987 and 1998 relate to the present Goa State only.
