Abstract: From General Introduction: The, Nicobar District which came into existence in the year. 1974 is the second' District in the Territory and the Southern most District in the Country. The District consists of 19 Islands out, of which 13 are inhabited. The number of census villages in the District as per 1981 census was 171 as against 491 in the State. There are two Tehsils and Two Blocks in the District namely Car Nicobar and Nancowrie, But for ail practical purposes, however, the District is divided into three areas viz, Car Nicobar Island, Nancowrie group of Islands and Great Nicobar Island. Car Nicobar is the headquarter of the District, The District covers a total area of about 1841 Sq.Kms which is only 22.3% of the total area of the territory.
