From Preface: At the time of Independence, India inherited an Educational System which was not only qualitatively small but also characterised by striking regional and structural imbalances. Only 14% of the population was literate and only one child out of three had been enrolled in Primary School. The education scenario in Andhra Pradesh was no way different at that point of time. The State traversed a long way in these 50 years in educational development particularly in Elementary Education. 98% of the population in the State are provided with a Primary School within a walking distance of 1 K.M. 78.98 lakh children(79.95%) are enrolled in Primary Schools, out of the estimated children of 98 lakhs in the age-group of 6-11 years by 1996-97.en_US
