Abstract: Adult Education Programme In Karnataka has been continued during 1984-85 with 42 On-going projects at an estimated cost of Rs.124-62 lakhs to cover 1 .29 lakh adult illiterates in the age group of 15-35 years through the course of 10 months (ten months) duration under State Sector. Further, in the same sector. to augument the regular programme, a short term programme "Akshara Sena" which was implemented during 1983-84 has been continued during 1984-85 to cover 3.84 lakh adults through 6400 centres in two batches in selected eight districts - (Gulbarga, Ralchur, Bljapur, Belgaum, Chitradurga, Kolar, Mandya, Mysore. This programme has been operated through voluntary organisations like village panchayats, taluk development boards, youth clubs, etc. Government have extended financial assistance to the tune of Rs.500 per centre per year to purchase slates and books and It is estimated that a sum of Rs.10.00 lakhs would be spent during the year. In first batch 3447 centres were opened with an enrolment of 1.03 lakh adults. In Second batch 3395 centres were opened with an enrolment of 1.02 lakh adults.
