Abstract: NCERT has recently set up a Unit, concerned with the problems of women’s education in India. But prior to this, some work was done in the area of values concerned with the differential status of women in India. As a result of some of the deliberations in the conferences held in this matter, some values were identified, which will lead to'an equality of women in our society. In the ten year school curriculum, NCERT had already emphasised the need for a common curriculum for all, including girls, so that women have an equal opportunity later on in matters of education. A change in the existing values of society, leading to an improvement in the status of women, is not very easy to bring about. But a beginning can be made, as has been attempted in this volume, by way of identifying the values which should be expressed through the teaching of languages, social sciences, biological sciences and mathematics textbooks and other instructional material used in our educational system at the school stage.
