dc.description.abstractThe Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme is one of the lmportant programmes sponsored by the Government of India to promote the educational and economic interests of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, The Scheme though introduced by The Government as early as in 1944, gathered momentum only in the post-Independence era, when it was extended in 1948-49 to cover the Scheduled Tribes also. The Scheme has received importance and attention progressively in the successive Five Year plans and the number of beneficiaries steadily increased from 2,179 in 1951-52 to 5,21 lakhs in 1900-81,en_US
