Abstract: Regular surveillance of social sector schemes such as literacy campaigns through a systematic monitoring mechanism and periodic publication of reports on the progress of such schemes to bring about the much desired transparency in their implementation are two aspects, the importance of which cannot be over emphasised. That is why the National Literacy Mission has been constantly striving to streamline and strengthen its monitoring system. The Directorate of Adult Education has been entrusted with the responsibility of devising the method of collection and dissemination of data and information on the campaigns launched under the aegis of the Mission across the length and breadth of the country. The Mission has also ensured regular monthly monitoring meetings at the State level thereby enabling collection of data at the national level in the prescribed formats. These are then compiled through a carefully developed Management Information System. Every care is being taken to make the system as objective and credit-worthy as possible. These constant endeavours have started bearing fruit and now reports from States have started coming regularly.
