Report of the Working Group on Technical Education

Abstract

Technical Education is a corner stone for national development. Large strides have been taken in the field of Technical Education during the last three decades and today India has the third largest scientific and technical man-power in the world. To meet the valid argument that there should be a proper assessment of qualified technical manpower with reference to demands including their employment, that facilities at various levels of Technical Education should be decentralised, that research and postgraduate programmes should be developed and that collaboration with Industry should be fostered, a Working Group was constituted in November, 1977. Care was taken to include in the Working Group and Sub-Groups representatives o f all sectors (including the press and public) so as to make the deliberations relevant and meaningful. Recommendations o f the Working Group submitted to the Government in January, 1978 were considered by the All India Council for Technical Education in February, 1.978 and the final decisions are contained in this document. To the document are also appended the reports o f the Sub-Groups so as to give the correct perspective to the decisions o f the A ll India Council for Technical Education.
