The National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration has been set up by the Government of India as an autonomous organisation under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. The history of the Institute dates back to 1962 when the Government of India under a 10-year agreement with UNESCO, established the Asian Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (AIEPA) for training of senior educational planners and administrators in the Asian Region. On the expiry of this agreement in 1972, the AIEPA was merged with National Staff College for Educational Planners and Administrators (NSCEPA) which was given the present name of the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration in 1979.en_US
