Abstract: Based on the returns received from the various Universities and Colleges in the country this statistical report which is the eleventh in the series entitled ‘University Development in India—Basic facts and figures’ has been prepared for the year 1971-72 giving briefly the latest facts and figures pertaining to university education. The data relates largely to the position as on August 15, 1971. Information presented in the report in respect of the three universities viz., Indira Kala Sangit Vishvavidyalaya, Varanasey a Sanskrit Vishvavidyalaya (since renamed as Sampurnanand Sanskrit Vishvavidyalaya) and Rabindra Bharati relates only to the University campus, viz., Khairagarh , Varanasi and Calcutta respectively. No information was received from K.S.Darbhanga Sanskrit Vishvavidyalaya for 1971-72. In the case of colleges which did not send statistics for 197172 data of the previous year(s) have been used. Expansions o f the abbreviations used and other relevant details have been indicated in an explanatory note at the end.
